Have you ever looked for a four leaf clover? When you were a child, did you ever search in your parent's lawn, or out in a field somewhere for a four leaf clover? If you have children or grandchildren, have you taken them on a hunt for the elusive four leaf clover, and seen the anticipation and excitement in their eyes during the hunt? Then there is the thrill of finding one, and the dissappointment of not finding one. Did you ever have a friend, a relative, a neighbor that found a four leaf clover? What was their reaction when they found it? Was it excitement? Was it joy? Was it bragging? What was your reaction when someone you knew told you that they found a four leaf clover, and you didn't? Was it envy? Was it jealousy? Was it a determination that you too will find your four leaf clover? What is it, that make the four leaf clover so special? So lucky? There are 2 main themes that we will briefly discuss. The first theme is on rarity. It's true that four leaf clovers are rare. In someone's lawn that has clover, there may be thousands of three leaf clovers, but maybe, just maybe one four leaf clover. In a field there may be tens of thousands of three leaf clovers, but maybe, just maybe a few four leaf clovers. We all appreciate something that is rare. We generally value something that is rare. Often, we value rarity by increasing the price of rare items. Sometimes the price of things skyrockets the more rare it is. Take for example collectible baseball cards. If there is a popular sought after baseball card, and there are 100,000 of those cards in existence, the value of each of those 100,000 cards won't be very high. However, if that same baseball card is rare and only has 10 cards in existence, the value or price of each of those 10 cards can be very high. Even though four leaf clovers are rare, perhaps due to the fact that as four leaf clovers are living things and they grow all over the place, we don't really put a price in them. We just value them as a rarity, not only the four leaf clover itself, but also in the thrill of actually finding one. Finding a four leaf clover is a special moment, which makes the finder feel special about themselves. Something unique. Something rare. Something lucky. That something, is that they feel different about themselves, something that sets them apart from most other people. That something is what makes them feel "lucky". In fact, many people who find a four leaf clover, keep their lucky four leaf clover, and cherish it for years to come. The second theme is on a religious symbolism. Some people see the clover, as a religious symbol in Christianity in both the three leaf clover and the four leaf clover. The three leaf clover in this light, is seen as each leaf representing the Trinity - God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The fourth leaf in the four leaf clover, is seen as representing mankind. In this light the four leaf clover is not seen as a anomoly or a quirk of nature, but rather perfection, where the three aspects of God are bonded together with mankind.
